Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
