A Groundbreaking Leader

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
