“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
