"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have publicly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a close gang. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words track endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
